Aside from the love and kindness given to the child, an important aspect of daily parenting is building relationships. These relationships must be good ones to serve as a strong foundation for creating a robust “self” for the child. The concept of self is very important; it is like the foundation pillar of life. If molded well and correctly, the child will grow up to be a good and responsible person. Conversely, if the molding is poor for any reason—whether it be excessive indulgence, harsh authoritarianism, or neglect—the child will grow up with deficiencies and accumulate inappropriate and aggressive behaviors.
The fundamental principles for building a strong “self” for young child according to the development of executive function (EF) skills.
- When your child’s fingers are strong enough, encourage them to eat with their own hands => Your child must take care of their own life.
- Bathe, wash your face, brush your teeth, and clean your body thoroughly => Your body is valuable, you must take care of it yourself.
- Our home, you must help take care of it. Sweep and mop the floor, wash the dishes. Your responsibility, you must be responsible.
All of this can happen if parents who raise their children in daily life set an example and continuously encourage and support their children in fulfilling these various responsibilities, and further develop them to higher levels according to the child’s age, from early childhood to primary and secondary education. The important benefits that arise simultaneously, in addition to the bond that serves as a good rudder for the child’s life throughout their lifetime, are the high-level skills that will help the child lead a good life. That is, the child can self-regulate and control.
